Grindstone Island ChurchOur Church is officially a United Methodist Church, but it is run as an ecumenical church where all faiths are welcome. About 52 different denominations are represented in the congregation.
The building has some history. It was built by the of Rev. Alexander Shorts
in the 1890's. He gathered the materials alone. He was given an unused church, which was on Hull Island. He tore is down and rebuilt it on Grindstone Island. Rev. Shorts carried much of the materials on his back to and from the boat landings. He held the first services in the summer of 1890. In 1899 when the Rev. Roscoe Smith came to the Island to preach, he found the church
property collapsing. The builder, the Rev. Shorts, had passed away in 1896, and no care of the property had been made since that time. Rev. Smith got busy, and with the aid of several members of the church, as well as some outside help, he placed the steel rods across the church and drew the into position, thus strengthening the church and making
it usable again for services.
In 1935 during the ministry of the Rev. Basil Gabriel [who served the church until 1945] the church was rebuilt. The original towers were removed and a single one was built, forming an entrance way. The floor was raised, the roof shingled and new ceilings were installed. At the same time, a well was drilled on the property, known as 'Gabriel's Well' The horse sheds were converted into a dining hall and a Ladies Aid sewing room.
In the spring of 1998 the interior of the church was stripped. Many meetings were held during the summer of 1998 and the all the Island's inhabitants contributed ideas, labor, and money. Plans for remodeling the interior were completed . During the winter of 1998-99 the interior work was completed for services for the summer of 1999.
