William H. CONSAUL

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of 28 Dec. 1931):  CLAYTON---William H. Consaul, 56, retired farmer, died suddenly at his home here at 1 this morning.  Death was caused by a heart attack.  Mr. Consaul had previously appeared to be in his
usual good health.

    He was born in the town of Clayton on Dec. 21, 1875, to Silas W. and Viola Crosby Consaul.  His entire life was spent in the vicinity of this village.  He was engaged in farming for a long period but moved to this village to reside a
number of years ago.

    Mr. Consaul was married to Miss Jennie Comins, St. Lawrence, on Oct. 9, 1895.  She survives.  His mother who resides at St. Lawrence, also survives.

    Other survivors are: one son, Berney A. Consaul, Clayton; three daughters, Mrs. Stanley Percy, Mrs. John Riddler, Clayton; Mrs. Orson Cooke, Syracuse; one brother, Elmer Consaul, St. Lawrence; one sister, Mrs. Arthur Wood, this village and
four grandchildren.

    The funeral will be held from the home at 1 Wednesday afternoon and from the Methodist Episcopal Church at St. Lawrence at 2 p.m.  Rev. W. A. Gardiner, pastor of the Adams Methodist Episcopal Church, and a former pastor here, will
officiate.  Burial will be at St. Lawrence.


Jennie COMINS

Obituary (from newspaper of 6 May 1967):  CLAYTON---Mrs. Jennie C. Consaul, 91, widow of William W. Consaul and resident of Clayton until two years ago, when she went to live with a daughter, Mrs. Mabel Stovall, Norcross, Ga., died 6 p.m.
Thursday in an Atlantic, Ga., hospital.

    Mrs. Consaul's body will be at the Cummings Funeral Home.  The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, Rev. Dean P. Shaw, pastor of the Clayton Methodist Church, officiating.  Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

    Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

    Besides Mrs. Stovall, Mrs. Consaul is survived by another daughter, Mrs. John M. (Gladys) Riddler and a son, Bernard A. Consaul, Clayton; two brothers, Harrison Comins, Clayton, R.D., and Columbus Comins, Watertown, R.D.; six
grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

    Mrs. Consaul was born July 24, 1875, at Clayton, a daughter of James and Addie Cornwall Comins.  She spent most of her life in the Clayton vicinity.  She was married to William Consaul Oct. 9, 1895.  He died Dec, 28, 1931.

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of 4 April 1998):  PLESSIS---Robert F. Consaul, 78, of 25414 Route 26, died Friday morning at Edward John Noble Hospital-Samaritan, Alexandria Bay, where he had been a patient since March 28.

    Mr. Consaul joined the Army Air Corps on Sept. 17, 1940, at Chanute Field, Rantoul, Ill.  He served with the 36th Fighter Squadron at Brisbane, Australia; Port Moresby, New Guinea, and the Philippines.

    He was discharged in 1945, but was recalled to service in 1950 to serve in the Korean War.  During that time, he served at Mitchell Field,  Long Island; Greenville, S.C.; Japan; Dow Air Force Base at Bangor, Maine; Biloxi, Miss.; and
Hancock Field, Syracuse, from where he retired at the rank of master sergeant after 20 years of service.

    For his service, he earned a Good Conduct Medal with four loops, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four bronze stars, World War II Victory Medal,
Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, and United Nations Service Medal.

    Mr. Consaul had been a border patrol officer at Massena and then worked for the Pinkerton Detective Agency and Merit Protective Agency in Syracuse, where he also drove a city bus for four years.   He was also a corrections officer at
Jamesville Penitentiary before being recalled for war service in 1950.

    After his retirement from the military, he moved to Orlando, Fla., where he worked at the Orange County Sheriff's Department.  In 1980, he returned to the north country and moved to Adams, and later to Plessis.

    Born July 15, 1919, in Clayton, son of Berney A. and Ruth McAvoy Consaul, he was educated in Clayton schools until entering the military.  He later earned a general equivalency diploma.

    He attended Francis Warren Air Force Academy in Colorado and the noncommissioned officers academy in Westover, Mass.  He attended a corrections school in Albany and a border patrol school in El Paso, Texas, and took criminal and security
procedures courses at Syracuse University.

    He married Julia DeWolfe of Alexandria Bay on Feb. 12, 1950, in Homer.

    Mr. Consaul was a member of Clayton United Methodist Church, a 32nd-degree member of Konosioni Masonic Lodge 950, Syracuse, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5344, Adams, and American Legion Post 821, Clayton, and a life member of
the Disabled American Veterans.

    He was a past member and worthy patron of the Adams Order of the Eastern Star, and later transferred his membership to Calumet Chapter 130 at Alexandria Bay.  He was also a Shriner with the Media Temple in Watertown and a member of the
Scottish Rite.

    Surviving besides his wife are a half brother, William Consaul, address unknown; a half sister, Cynthia Consaul, address unknown; three nephews, a niece, and five great-nieces.

    A brother, Kenneth Consaul, died March 12.

    The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Costello Funeral Home, Alexandria Bay, with the Rev. Jeffrey A. Neevel officiating.  Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery, Alexandria Bay.

    Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

    Donations may be made to the Reformed Church of the Thousand Isles, Alexandria Bay, or the Clayton United Methodist Church.


Byron Gotham MCAVOY

Obituary (from newspaper of 13 April 1970):  CLAYTON---Byron G. McAvoy, 81, Crystal Springs Road, died Sunday at 1:30 a.m. in the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown, where he had been a patient since March 29.

    The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Rev. Robert Mowatt, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

    Friends may call at the Cummings Funeral Home today from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

    Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Olga Spies McAvoy; two daughters, Mrs. John (Ida) Delaney, and Mrs. Philip (Ruth) Ivey, Clayton; five sons, Donald and Seanan, Clayton, Royden, Jacksonville, Fla., Glen, Houston, Tex., Dr. Byron G. McAvoy,
Jr., Hammond; a brother, Charles McAvoy, Old Bridge, N.J.; 22 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

    He was born at Pouquagon Dec. 24, 1888, one of six children of Josiah and Ida Kendall McAvoy, and had lived most of his life in the Clayton section, working as a farmer and as a horticulturalist with the Thousand Island Bridge Authority.

    Married twice, his first wife, Bertha Seanan McAvoy, died April 10, 1955.  He then married Mrs. Olga Page Spies of Watertown on Jan. 1, 1961.
