Harold H. MCCONNELL

Obituary (from newspaper of 30 Sept. 1969):  Harold H. McConnell, 60, of 301 Blandina St., Utica, native of Grindstone Island and former Watertown resident, died at 4 this morning in St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Utica.  Ill about a year, he had
been hospitalized frequently during that time.  Death was caused by pneumonia and a heart condition.

    Arrangements are with a Utica funeral home.

    Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Jean Snyder McConnell; six children by his first marriage: Mrs. Raymond (Beverly) Boyd, Manchester, Conn.; Master Sgt. John W. McConnell in the Air Force at Westover, Mass.; Mrs. Edward (Betty Ann) Ward, New
Haven, Conn.;  Staff Sgt. Harold F. McConnell in the Air Force in Italy; James R., 67 Maywood Terrace; and Michael Paul, East Haven, Conn.

    Also, seven children by his second marriage: Ronald; Sandra, Rome; Kathleen, Barbara, Vivian, Brenda, Gerald, all at home; his mother, Mrs. Cora Mae Carter McConnell, Gouverneur; four sisters, Mrs. Frances Garnsey, and Mrs. Clifford
(Helen) Timmerman, both of Clayton; Mrs. Dwain (Florence) Bowman, Brigham Ave., and Mrs. Alden (Edna) Bishop, Central St.; two brothers, Walter J. McConnell, Jr., Ilion; and Robert M., Gouverneur; and 17 grandchildren.

    Two daughters born of his second marriage, died in 1961: Francine at the age of 8, and Marlene May, 5, who was killed on Easter Sunday when struck by a car at Mill and Lynde Sts. after attending church.  The family then lived at 205 E.
Lynde St.

    Mr. McConnell was born Nov. 23, 1908 on Grindstone Island, a son of Mrs. Cora Mae Carter McConnell and the late Walter J. McConnell.  He attended Grindstone Island school.

    In 1930, he married Margaret Fahey of Rome in St. Mary's Church, Rome.  The marriage ended in divorce in 1946.  In 1951, he married Jean Snyder of Watertown in this city.

    Mr. McConnell worked for years at the Revere Copper and Brass Co. in Rome.  Returning to Watertown, he was employed at Bagley & Sewall Co. and also drove a hay truck between Watertown and New York City for Michael Abbate.  He moved to
Utica three years ago and worked in Oriskany at the Oriskany Malleable Iron Works until forced by poor health to retire about a year ago.

    An avid fisherman, he was a member of sports clubs in the Utica section.

Robert A. MCCONNELL

Obituary (from the Watertown Daily Times of Sunday, 13 May 1990):  GOUVERNEUR---Robert A. McConnell, 67, died Friday morning at his home in Hermon.  He had been ill with cancer.

    The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Green Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gerald Service, pastor of St. James Catholic church, officiating.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Watertown.

    Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.  Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

    Surviving are his wife, Ruth; a stepson, Timothy Weir, Potsdam; a son, Robert, Hermon; two daughters, Mary Ann Durham and Joanne McConnell, both of Hermon; four grandchildren; a brother, Walter, Ilion, and two sisters, Helen Timmerman,
Clayton, and Florence Bowman, Watertown.

    A brother, Harold, and two sisters, Frances Garnsey and Edna Bishop, died before him.

    He was born on Grindstone Island on April 28, 1923, son of Walter and Cora McConnell.  He married Ruth Weir on April 5, 1960, at Black River.  They lived in Gouverneur for 16 years, and then moved to Hermon.  He was employed by the St. Joe
Minerals Corp. for several years until he became disabled in 1972.

Florence M. "Flossie" MCCONNELL

Obituary (from Thousand Islands Sun of 6 Jan. 1993):  GRINDSTONE ISLAND---Florence M. Bowman, 73, native of Grindstone Island, formerly of Maywood Terrace, died Dec. 27 in the Samaritan-Keep Nursing Home, Watertown.

    The funeral was held Dec. 30 at St. Patrick's Church, Watertown, with the Rev. John Hunt officiating.  Burial was in Brookside Cemetery.

    Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County Inc., 714 Washington St., Watertown.

    Surviving are two sons, Donald J., Watertown, and Larry D., Black River; two daughters, Mrs. James (Lou Anne) Monroe, Brownville, and Mrs. James (Roxanne) Houghmaster, Watertown; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother
Walter McConnell, Ilion; a sister, Mrs. Clifford (Helen) Timmerman, Clayton, and several nieces and nephews.

    Two sons, Dwain and Richard A., two brothers, Harold and Robert McConnell, and two sisters, Edna Bishop and Frances Garnsey, died before her.

    Born on Grindstone Island, March 9, 1919, a daughter of Walter J. and Cora Mae Carter McConnell, she attended Grindstone Island schools and graduated from Watertown High School.

    She married Dwain P. Bowman Feb. 12, 1936, at Bethany Methodist Church, with the Rev. Edgar O. Spaven officiating.  The couple lived in Watertown following their marriage.  Mr. Bowman, a Knowlton Brothers employee for 16 years, died Aug.
7, 1982.

    Mrs. Bowman was a homemaker.


Lawrence E. BLACK

Obituary (from Town & Country News section of the Watertown Daily Times of 28 Jan. 1981):  The funeral for Lawrence E. Black, 69, was held Tuesday at the Frederick Brothers Funeral Home, with Rev. Robert Mowatt, pastor of Albion Baptist Church,
officiating.  Spring burial will be in Grove Cemetery, LaFargeville.

    Mr. Black, Omar Road, LaFargeville, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1981 at Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay.  He had been in ill health for five years.

    He is survived by his wife, Catherine E.; seven sons, John L. and Robert, both of LaFargeville, Lesley and Leo, both of Depauville, Gary, Dexter, Norman, Seneca Falls, and Richard, Griffiss Air Force Base, Rome; 15 grandchildren, a
brother, Douglas, Avery, Texas; a sister, Lotus, Baltimore, Md., and several nieces and nephews.

    Born on Grindstone Island, April 16, 1911, a son of the late Thomas Wellington and Eva Black, he attended school on Grindstone Island.

    On March 22, 1933 he married Catherine E. Sulier of Grindstone Island at the Methodist Parsonage in Clayton.

    Mr. Black was a farmer and road superintendent on Grindstone Island until 1950 when he moved to LaFargeville.  There he operated a farm until he went to work for the Town of Orleans in 1962.  In 1967 he went to work for Frink Snowplow,
Clayton, retiring in 1975 because of ill health.

    He was a member of the LaFargeville Fire Department, a 29-year member of the Clayton Masonic Lodge No. 296 F. & A.M., and a communicant of the LaFargeville Methodist Church.

Marguerite MORAN

Obituary (from newspaper of Tuesday, 5 June 1984):  CLAYTON---The funeral for Mrs. Marguerite H. Marshall, 99, formerly of 545 Alexandria St., widow of James S. Marshall, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Cummings Funeral Home here and 11:30 a.m.
at St. Mary's Church with Rev. Bruce T. Favreau, parochial vicar, officiating.  Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

    Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.  Members of the St. Anne's Society will hold a prayer service at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

    Donations may be made in her name to St. Mary's Church Memorial Fund or the Clayton Volunteer Ambulance Fund.

    Mrs. Marshall died at 8 a.m. Monday at St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center, Ogdensburg, where she had been a patient since May 2, 1975.

    She is survived by five sons, Francis L., Fort Lauderdale, Fla., J. Milton, John L., Patrick F., and L. A. (Wren), all of Clayton; two daughters, Mrs. Walter (Stacia) Johnson, Buffalo, and Mrs. Charles (Bettie) Cipullo, Clayton; a sister,
Miss Kathleen B. Moran, Long Island; 24 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

    A daughter, Mrs. Marguerite Mason, died Oct. 16, 1969.  A son, William R., died May 19, 1978, and two brothers and a sister died before her.

    Born Dec. 3, 1884 in Clayton, a daughter of Francis and Mary Jane Colon Moran, she attended Clayton area schools and married James S. Marshall Nov. 26, 1902 at St. Mary's Church.

    Mr. Marshall, a boatman and caretaker 30 years for Dr. and Mrs. J. C. White, Rum Point, Grindstone Island, died Oct. 2, 1933.

    Mrs. Marshall was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.

    She was a granddaughter of Xavier Colon, the boat builder, who is credited with building the first St. Lawrence Skiff.  Her father, Frank Moran, was also a boat builder in Clayton and Greenport, L.I.
