Mina PUNANEN

Obituary (from Thousand Islands Sun of 13 Nov. 1969):  GRINDSTONE ISLAND---Mina Pananen, 83, widow of Victor Pananen, died in the emergency room of the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown, where she was taken by ambulance from her home.  She
had been in poor health for some time.

    The funeral was Wednesday morning at the Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton.  Burial was in Grindstone Island Cemetery.

    Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Vaino (Ida Marie) Anderson, Grindstone Island, and Mrs. Henry (Sylvia) Toikkanen, Kiviparvi, Muhola, Finland; a son, Matti, Grindstone Island, and a granddaughter, Miss Sylvia Anderson, Syracuse.

    Mrs. Pananen was born Dec. 21, 1885, in Finland, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Punanen.  She came to the United States with her husband in 1904, settling in Crelon, Mich.  He worked six years in the copper mines on Calumet Island, Mich.
She returned to Finland in 1908, after which her husband sailed the Great Lakes for 18 years before he came to Grindstone Island, where he operated a farm from 1930 to his death.

    Mrs. Pananen rejoined her husband here in 1930.  After his death Sept. 13, 1951 she continued to operate the farm.


Matti PANANEN

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of 1 Oct. 1985):  CLAYTON---Matti Pananen, 78, Grindstone Island, died Monday morning at Crouse-Irving Memorial Hospital, Syracuse, where he had been a patient for a short time.

    Funeral services are 1 p.m. Thursday at the Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton, with Rev. Dale E. Austin, pastor of Clayton United Methodist Church, officiating.

    Burial will be at Grindstone Island Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the local chapter of the American Heart Association.

    Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Ida Anderson, Grindstone Island; a niece Mrs. Robert (Sylvia) Shoultes, Clay; a great-niece, great-nephew, and cousins.

    Mr. Pananen was born Feb. 12, 1907, in Hancock, Mich., the son of Victor and Miina Puranen Pananen.  He later moved to Grindstone Island, where he was a farmer for many years.
