Edgar A. CHASE

Obituary (from newspaper of 26 Mar. 1937):  Edgar A. Chase, 75, of 1 Maple Ave., former well-known tinker, died at 11:45 Friday evening in the Mercy Hospital, where he had been a patient since Monday.  Death was attributed to pneumonia.

    Mr. Chase had been in poor health for about a year and a year ago he was a patient in the same hospital for seven weeks, under treatment for hardening of the arteries and heart disease.

    He was born on Grindstone Island, Oct. 24, 1861, a son of John and Rosella Chase.  During the early part of his life he was a fisherman and guide on the St. Lawrence River.  Later he was second mate on the steamer, St. Lawrence, under
Captain Bertrand, and he also sailed the Great Lakes.

    Mr. Chase formerly resided at Alexandria Bay and Clayton, coming to this city from Clayton about 25 years ago.  For about 40 years he was a tinker and traveled throughout this section, mending umbrellas, sharpening scissors and knives, and
doing other general repair work of that nature.  He retired about twelve years ago.

    About 55 years ago he married Miss Elizabeth McDonald, native of Gananoque, Ont., on Grindstone Island.

    Surviving him are his widow; four children, Edgar E. Chase, Lowville, Harry L. Chase and Sidney F. W. Chase, city and Mrs. Bertha V. Case, formerly of Syracuse, whose address is now unknown; a brother, William Chase, Chippewa Bay, and a
sister, Mrs. Eva A. Kittle, city.

    Mr. Chase was a member of the Hope Presbyterian Church.

    Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 at the family home.  Rev. Cassius J. Sargent, former minister of the Hope Presbyterian Church, who is now retired, and Rev. L. Richard Mellin, now minister of the Hope church, will
officiate.  Burial will be made in North Watertown Cemetery.


Edgar E. CHASE

1  CMNT Of Rodman


Obituary (from newspaper of 25 Oct. 1938):  Edgar A. Chase, 41, farmer of Rodman, R.D. 1, died at 6:35 this morning in the Mercy Hospital where he had been a patient since Sept. 13.  Death was attributed to ulcers of the stomach.  Mr. Chase
underwent an operation at the hospital on Sept. 13 and since then had undergone two blood transfusions, one on Oct. 17 and the other Friday.

    He was born at Thousand Island Park on Feb. 13, 1897, a son of Mrs. Isabelle McDonald Chase of 1 Maple Ave., and the late Edgar A. Chase.  He spent the early part of his life in that vicinity.  For the past three months he had resided on a
farm in Rodman.  For ten years prior to that he lived in Lowville.

    His wife, Favie Finney whom he married several years ago, died on June 24, 1936 in the Lewis County General Hospital.

    Surviving are his mother; four children, Jane and Jean, twins; Harold and Richard, all of Rodman; two brothers, Harry Chase of Lowville, and Sidney F. W. Chase of 1 Maple Ave., and a sister, Mrs. Bertha V. Case of Syracuse.

    Funeral services will be held from the Northam & Fox Funeral Home Thursday afternoon at 2 instead of at 1 Maple Ave. due to the illness of his mother, Mrs. Isabelle Chase.  Rev. Cassius J. Sargent, retired Hope Presbyterian minister, will
officiate.  Burial will be in North Watertown cemetery.


Joseph Mythias CHARLEBOIS

During a period between 1850 and 1865, Joseph traveled by stage through Watertown to Syracuse, then to Buffalo by way of the Erie Canal by packet boat, and then by steamboat to and from western shipyards.


Leo S. CONANT

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of 6 Nov. 1989):  Leo S. Conant, 85, West Bloomfield, formerly of 116 Charles St., retired employe of the New York Telephone Co., died Friday at F.F. Thompson Memorial Hospital, Canandaigua.

    The funeral will be at 7 this evening at the McElwee-Fuller Funeral Home, Canandaigua, with the Rev. Keith Murray, pastor of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Canandaigua, officiating.  Burial will be in Omar Cemetery, Omar.

    Contributions may be made to the West Bloomfield Ambulance Squad.

    Surviving are a son, Hewitt, Ionia; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald, Oneonta; and a sister, Leona Niles, Clayton.

    Born on Wellesley Island April 7, 1904, a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Conant, he married V. Christena Carnegie on Sept. 4, 1928, at Sackets Harbor, with the Rev. B.L. Nichols officiating.  Mrs. Conant, a native of Grindstone Island, died
June 29, 1988.  She was 86.

    Mr. Conant joined the New York Telephone Co. in 1927, working our of the Clayton office as a lineman.  He later seved as a lineman at Potsdam before transferring to the Watertown office as an installer-repairman.  Mr. Conant was appointed
to the position of service foreman in 1946.  he later retired from the company as building supervisor after more than 42 years' service.

    Mr. Conant was a member of Telephone Pioneers of America, Watertown Elks Lodge 496 and Watertown Masonic Lodge.


Violet Christina CARNEGIE

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of 30 June 1988):  GRINDSTONE ISLAND---V. Christena Conant, 86, Bloomdale Mobile Home Park, West Bloomfield, a native of Grindstone Island and formerly of 116 Charles St., Watertown, died early Wednesday
morning at the F.F. Thompson Memorial Hospital, Canandaigua.

    The funeral will be at 7 this evening at the McElwee-Fuller Funeral Home, 200 Buffalo St., Canandaigua.  Burial will be in Omar Cemetery.

    Contributions may be made to the West Bloomfield Ambulance Squad.

    Surviving are her husband, Leo S.; a son, Hewitt, Ionia; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Andrew Carnegie, Belleair, Fla.

    Born Aug. 4, 1901 on Grindstone Island, daughter of Robert and Jessie Brown Carnegie, she married Leo S. Conant Sept. 4, 1928, at Sackets Harbor, with Rev. B.L. Nichols officiating.

    Mrs. Conant had lived in the West Bloomfield area for many years.  She was a housewife and is a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Clayton.

    Mr. Conant, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Conant, Wellesley Island, is a retired building su pervisor for the New York Telephone Co.


Mable SEAMAN

Obituary:  CLAYTON---The funeral for Mrs. Mable Conant Kittle, 85, of Cantwell Drive, widow of George Kittle, who died Wednesday at Mercy Hospital, Watertown, where she had been a patient six weeks, was Saturday afternoon in the Clayton United
Methodist Church with Rev. James E. Leland, acting pastor, officiating.  Burial was in Omar Cemetery.

    Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ambrose (Leona) Niles, Clayton; five sons, Leo S. Conant, Leslie W. Conant, William C. Conant, all in Watertown; Harvey B. Conant, Elizabethtown, Pa.; Donald E. Conant. Franklin; 18 grandchildren and 42
great-grandchildren.

    A son, Llewelyn J. (Jack) Conant, died Feb. 13, 1965.

    She was a member of the Clayton United Methodist Church and a former member of the Clayton Grange and Clayton Rebekah Lodge.

    Mrs. Kittle was born June 3, 1883 at Fine View, Wellesley Island, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Seaman.  On June 3, 1901, she was married to William C. Conant.  He died in June 1936.  She was married to George H. Kittle, a farmer,
Sept. 25, 1954 in the Clayton Methodist parsonage with Rev. Solomon Card, pastor, officiating.  He died Nov. 6, 1962.

    She had made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose Niles, Cantwell Drive.


James Benton CARNEGIE

Obituary (from newspaper of 24 Sept. 1975):  Funeral services for J. Benton Carnegie, 76, of 947 Pond St., Syracuse, were held Sept. 17 in Syracuse.  Burial was on Grindstone Island.

    Mr. Carnegie, a native of Grindstone Island, died Sept. 15 in State University Hospital, Syracuse, after a long illness.

    Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Eleanor Carnegie; two sons, James J., Syracuse, and Robert, Lockport; two brothers, David, Syracuse, and Robert A., Clearwater, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Leo Conant, Watertown, and seven grandchildren.

    Mr. Carnegie was a retired chauffeur for the late G. Alexander Leonard and had lived in Syracuse the past 45 years.
