Obituary (from newspaper of 14 Nov. 1974): CLAYTON---Gerald E. Hayes, 67, Clayton-Alexandria Bay Road, was found dead in a boathouse on his property about 5 p.m. Wednesday by Clyde Garnsey, who was returning to the mainland from Round Island
where he had been doing construction work.Mr. Hayes had been out in his boat and had stopped by Round Island and visited with the construction workers. He returned to shore, secured his boat and was apparently stricken ill about 4 p.m.
The funeral will be Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton, and at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., Friday.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Muriel S. Hayes; three sons, Kenneth F., Dexter, Darrel S., and Ralph J., both of Clayton; a brother, J. Robert Hayes, Syracuse; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Born at Clayton Feb. 1,
1907, a son of John and Cecelia McCann Hayes, he was graduated from Clayton High School in 1924 and married Muriel Sherman Oct. 22, 1928, at St. Mary's Church with Rev. George E. Racette, officiating.A carpenter and contractor, he was employed 30 years by George W. Mercier, Inc., retiring five years ago as shipyard foreman.
He was co-owner of Hayes Rivershore Cottages, Clayton-Alexandria Bay Road.

Born June 5, 1909, in Clayton, daughter of Ralph E. and Ora L. Dodge Sherman, she attended local schools and graduated from Clayton High School. She married Gerald E. Hayes on Oct. 22, 1928, in St. Mary's Church with the Rev. George
Racette officiating. Mr. Hayes died Nov. 13, 1974.Surviving are three sons, Kenneth F., Watertown, Ralph J., Gananoque, Ontario, and Darrel S., Clay; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
A brother, Everett Sherman, died before her.
The funeral will be held at the family's convenience at Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Clayton Volunteer Ambulance Fund.
