Margaret E. VANALSTYNE

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times):  CLAYTON---Margaret E. Daily, 89, Vero Beach, Fla., summer resident of 406 Merrick St., died Sunday morning at Indian River Memorial Hospital, Vero Beach.

    Mrs. Daily farmed with her husband for many years and was a waitress in various restaurants in Jefferson County, including at El Dorado Restaurant, Watertown, and for 15 years at a restaurant at Fishers Landing Corners.

    She had spent summers in Clayton and Fishers Landing since 1981.

    Born Jan. 29, 1911, in the town of Orleans, daughter of Stewart L. and Ella Haller Van Alstyne, she attended Orleans schools.

    She married Maurice Daily on June 6, 1934, in Adams Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Wallace officiating.  Mr. Daily died Nov. 6, 1981.

    Mrs. Daily was a member of the LaFargeville United Methodist Church, LaFargeville American Legion Auxiliary, LaFargeville Fire Department Auxiliary, LaFargeville Rebekah Lodge, and Clayton Senior Citizens.

     Surviving are two sisters, Lois Getman, Clayton, and Pauline Walti, LaFargeville; a half brother, Eugene Van Alstyne, LaFargeville; a half sister, Sharon VanAlstyne, Cape Vincent, and nieces and nephews.

    A sister, Doris Matthews, died before her.

    A memorial service will be held at LaFargeville United Methodist Church at a time to be announced.  Burial will be in Grove Cemetery, LaFargeville.

    There will be no calling hours.  Arrangements are with T.R. Jetty Funeral Home.

    Donations may be made to LaFargeville United Methodist Church.


Maurice E. VANALSTYNE

Obituary (from newspaper of 28 April 1947):  CHAUMONT---Maurice E. Van Alstyne, 72, former resident of Watertown and retired railroad man, died at his home in this village at 7:45 Saturday evening after an illness of about three weeks.

    Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 from the Chaumont First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. W.H. Seyfort, pastor of the church, officiating.  Burial will be made in the Adams Cemetery.

    Surviving Mr. Van Alstyne are his wife, Mrs. Mabel E. Van Alstyne, two daughters by his first wife, Mrs. Elton W. (Anita) Crabb, 1029 Boyd St., Watertown, Mrs. Elsie Botting, Knoxboro, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Mildred Hamilton, Fulton;
three sons by his first wife, Chester W. Van Alstyne, 444 Grand Ave., Watertown, Donald M., 529 Cross St., and Grant, 510 Binsse St., both of Watertown; five brothers, Clarence, Frank, and George Van Alstyne, all of Chaumont; Fred, Watertown,
and Stewart, LaFargeville; two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Beckwith and Mrs. Florence George, both of Hannibal.

    Mr. Van Alstyne was born in Depauville on Dec. 18, 1874, a son of the late Secord and Sarah Empey Van Alstyne.

    Mr. Van Alstyne married Miss Ella Louise Wright on April 27, 1904.  They had five children by the marriage.  Mrs. Van Alstyne died on Oct. 13, 1914.

    On July 11, 1917, he married Mrs. Mabel E. Crosby Saunders,widow of Isaac Saunders, who died July 17, 1910.

    Mr. Van Alstyne worked for the New York Central Railroad as a signal maintenance worker for about 30 years, retiring in 1939 at the age of 65.  He started his railroad career at Adams as a clerk for the American Express company.  He
remained in that capacity until March, 1906.

    On Sept. 13, 1909, he came to Watertown to join the signal maintenance division of the New York Central.  Mr. Van Alstyne was a member of the R.W. and O. Pioneers.
