1  CMNT Died In Infancy

Eli B. BUTTS

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times):  CLAYTON, May 4.---This village was shocked today at learning of the deaths of Village Trustee Eli Butts, and his brother, Alton Butts, from ptomaine poisoning.  Alton Butts died at 5:30 last night and the
death of his brother followed at 1:10 this morning.  Both are among the best known residents of the village.

Both Alton and Eli Butts had been operating a wood and lumber job a few miles out of the village toward Cape Vincent, returning home each evening.  Yesterday the two brothers started out as usual and worked all day.

Shortly after returning Alton Butts was taken ill with what appeared to be either acute indigestion or ptomaine poisoning.  A physician was summoned, but he died within a short time.

Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Butts, their parents, had been at their farm and were returning home when Eli Butts met them on the street and informed them of their son's death.  The couple were grief stricken at the news.  At that time Eli Butts
seemed to be in his usual health and did not complain of feeling ill.

A short time later he, too, was stricken, with the symptoms the same.  A doctor was called, but nothing could be done to relieve him and he died early this morning.

The two brothers were devoted both to each other and to their parents, and the father and mother are almost prostrated over their double bereavement.

A double funeral will be held at the Methodist Episcopal Church Monday at 1 p.m.  Both were prominent Odd Fellows and the lodge will attend the services in a body.

Alton Butts was born in the town of Clayton and had he lived until July 11 he would have been 31 years old.  He was married and leaves his widow and two children.  Last year he filled the office of village policeman and last January he was
appointed deputy sheriff by Sheriff Morris S. Gragg.
