Polly Ann GARNSEY

Obituary (from newspaper of 29 Oct. 1993):  CLAYTON---Polly Ann Rusho, 52, Lynn Haven, Fla., summer resident of Grindstone Island, died Wednesday morning in Hospital Corporation of America Gulf Coast Hospital, Panama City, Fla.  She had been
ill with cancer.

    The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Clayton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph DeGroote, pastor, and the Rev. Mark Pierce, pastor of LaFargeville United Methodist Church, officiating.  The body will be cremated.  Burial
will be in Grindstone Island Cemetery.

    Calling hours will be 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the T.R. Jetty Funeral Home.  Contributions may be made to the Clayton Volunteer Fire Department Fire Boat Fund.

    Surviving are her husband, Milton; four daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Beth) Kolakowski, Springfield, Va., Mrs. Stonewall (Marjorie) Mitchell, Pittsburgh, Pa., Mrs. Wayne (Julia) Furrow, Pensacola, Fla., and Sally Rusho, Baton Rouge, La.; three
grandchildren; two brothers, James and Clyde Garnsey, both of Clayton; three sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Grace) Wright, Clayton, Mrs. Donald (Leota) Wood, Cape Vincent, and Mrs. Edward (Sally) Feagin, Cordele, Ga., and nieces and nephews.

    Three brothers, Francis, Harold, and Jack Garnsey, and a sister, Norma Dodge, died previously.

    She was born April 3, 1941, in Omar, a daughter of Earl and Georgina Lindsay Garnsey.  She attended Clayton Central School.

    She married Milton J. Rusho April 4, 1959, at Clayton United Methodist Church with the Rev. William Gardner, then pastor, officiating.  Mr. Rusho is a retired employee of the U.S. Customs and Immigration Service.

    The couple lived in Nogales, Ariz., before moving to Florida in 1975.

    Mrs. Rusho was a homemaker.

    She was a member of the Lynn Haven Methodist Church and the Grindstone  Island United Methodist Church.

Irwin H. "Buck" SLATE

Obituary (from newspaper of Wednesday, 4 Feb. 1998):  CLAYTON---The funeral for Irwin "Buck" Slate, 60, Grindstone Island, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Clayton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph A. DeGroote, pastor, officiating.
Spring burial with military honors will be in Grindstone Island Cemetery.

    Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 today at T. R. Jetty Funeral Home.

    Mr. Slate died Sunday at his home.

    He was a farmer for many years on the island and also worked on Calumet Island for 10 years.  A riverboat captain, he worked at various marinas in the area, including Mercer's Marina in Clayton.

    Born Jan. 8, 1938, on Grindstone Island, son of Harry and Aleatha Calhoun Slate, he attended Grindstone Island and Clayton schools.

    He served in the Navy from May 1956 to April 1960 and was discharged at the rank of fireman.  He served in the Navy Reserve until May 1962.

    He married Brenda Mentry June 30, 1962, in Clayton Methodist Church.

    Mr. Slate was a member of Grindstone Island Methodist Church.

    Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Jay, Grindstone Island, and Thomas, Clayton; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Aleatha) Willis, Chipley, Fla.; two sisters, Irma Slate, Grindstone Island, and Mrs. Thomas (Mabel) LaMagma, Jupiter, Fla.;
five grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

    Two brothers, Frank and Robert, died before him.


George Harrison "Harry" BALCOM

Obituary (from newspaper of 13 Oct. 1967):  CLAYTON---George Harrison (Harry) Balcom, 79, of 509 Alexandria St., Clayton, died at 6:15 p.m. Thursday in Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay, where he had been a patient since Sept. 18.

   The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton.  Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.  Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

    Surviving are two sons, Lawrence C., of Clayton and Henry C. Balcom of New York City; two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Eddy, Cape Vincent, and Mrs. Frances Paddock, Williamstown; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

   Mr. Balcom was born in Osceloa Dec.1, 1887, a son of Charles and Amelia Bronson Balcom.  On Sept. 4, 1916, he married Sadie Paige in St. Mary's Church, Clayton.  She died in 1962.

    Mr. Balcom lived in Clayton 60 years and was a retired machinist.  He was a former river guide.


Sadie A. PAIGE

Obituary:  CLAYTON, Sept. 22---Mrs. Sadie A. Paige Balcom, 77, wife of Harry G. Balcom, of 509 Alexandria St., died at her home at 12:30 a.m. today.  She had been confined to her bed for three years.  Mrs. Balcom had been in ill health for 14
years.

    The funeral will be at 8:30 a.m. Monday at Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton, and at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, with Very Rev. Msgr. Dennis E. Lynch, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

   Friends may call at the funeral home from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

    Besides her husband, Mrs. Balcom is survived by two sons, Henry C., New York City, and Lawrence C., Clayton.  A son, Roderick P. died Dec. 24, 1931.  A sister, Mrs. Frank (Rachel) Corbishley, Syracuse, died in 1961, and a brother, Henry
Paige died Nov. 1, 1918.

    Mrs. Balcom was born in Clayton, Feb. 16, 1885, a daughter of Edward and Amelia Roderick Paige.  She was married to Harry G. Balcom on Sept. 4, 1916 in St. Mary's rectory, Clayton, with Rev. A.J. DuMonte officiating.

    Mrs. Balcom was a member of St. Mary's Church and the Ladies of St. Ann Society.
