Immediately following his graduation from college he entered the Phelps-Dodge Corporation and in 1892 was made vice president and director of the Corporation and its subsidiaries. He invested the large fortune, which he had inherited, in railroad stock until he was reported to hold more of these securities (estimated at $350,000,000) than any other man in the United States.
