James W. FITZGERALD

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of 14 Oct. 1970):  CLAYTON---James W. Fitzgerald, 78, of 351 James St., former village treasurer, died 3:20 p.m. Tuesday at the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown, where he was admitted Saturday,
following a fall at his home Saturday morning.  He underwent surgery Monday Morning.

    The funeral will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the Cummings Funeral Home and at 10 at St. Mary's Church.  Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.

     Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

    Surviving, besides his widow, Mrs. Calumet Kendall Fitzgerald, are three sisters, Miss Mary E. Fitzgerald, Miss Gertrude I. Fitzgerald, and Mrs. Lewis H. (Louise) Leonard, all of Clayton, and a brother, M. Edward, Clayton.  A brother,
Robert E., died at the age of 70 on Dec. 28, 1968.

    Born in Clayton Jan 1, 1881, son of Michael and Mary Connolly Fitzgerald, he attended local rural schools, and was graduated from Clayton High School and Cornell University, majoring in engineering.

    On July 1, 1942, he married Miss Calumet G. Kendall at Redwood, Rev. Walter J. Charbonneau, officiating.  A life resident of Clayton, he had owned and operated the Bellanger Liquor Store, Inc., the last 15 years.

    Also, he was an accountant and bank employe, and had been associated with the First National Exchange Bank of Clayton for 25 years.  He was cashier and director of the bank.  Also, he operated  Clayton Coal & Produce Co., formerly known as
Mahar & Fitzgerald---now, Hanna Fuels, Inc.

   Mr. Fitzgerald, active in civic affairs, was former clerk of the village of Clayton, a former trustee and former village treasurer and tax collector.

    He was a charter member of Colon-Couch Post 821, American Legion, a member of Clayton council 1000, Knights of Columbus, and a member of St. Mary's Church.


Calumet KENDALL

Obituary (from newspaper of Monday, 29 Nov. 1982):  CLAYTON---Mrs. Calumet (Kay) Fitzgerald, 92, of 351 James St., former manager of the Skinner Spoon Factory, died 5 a.m. Sunday at the Samaritan-Keep Nursing Home, Watertown, where she had been
a patient since Sept. 9.

    There will be a private funeral Tuesday morning at the Cummings Funeral Home, John St.  Spring burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.

    Donations in her name may be made to the Clayton Volunteer Ambulance fund.

    Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Herbert (Florence L.) Rogers, Watertown; two nephews, James and John Flanders, Clayton; and three nieces, Jean Milliani and Mrs. Mabel Everleigh, both of Clayton, and Eleanor Flanders.

    A brother, Navy Captain Clarence Kendall, and a sister, Leola Gallagher, died before her.

    She was born Dec. 12, 1889 on Calumet Island, the daughter of Aldridge and Victoria Bearup Kendall.

    She was educated in Clayton schools and married James Fitzgerald July 1, 1942 in Redwood with Rev. Walter J. Charboneau officiating.

    Mr. Fitzgerald died in 1970.

    For 44 years she managed the Skinner Spoon Factory, which manufactured a famed fluted blade fishing spinner.

    She was a member of the Clayton Civic Club and the Traveler's Club.

    She was a Jehovah Witness.


Andrew BEARUP

Andrew was a pioneer settler of Jefferson County, who located in Plessis, NY; later went with the "49'rs" to California, where he remained for a time, then returned east, and subsequently to California, where he died at the age of ninety years.


Herbert Warren ROGERS

Obituary (from newspaper of 4 Jan. 1940):  Herbert W. Rogers, 61, for more than 40 years engaged in the plumbing and heating business here, died at 11:45 this morning at his home, 203 Keyes Avenue, following an illness of seven weeks.  Death
was due to a heart ailment.

    Mr. Rogers had been in only fair health when he was last stricken ill the latter part of November.  Since that time he had been confined to his home, part of the time to his bed.  His condition, although serious during the past few weeks,
had been regarded as slowly improving.

    At Mr. Rogers' bedside at the time of his death were his wife, Mrs. Florence Louise Kendall Rogers, and a practical nurse, Mrs. Henry Rouchaud, who was also housekeeper.

    Surviving him besides his wife are two daughters, Mrs. Merton A. (Mabel L.) Eveleigh of 312 Park Drive, Mrs. Ambrose M. (Laurene Leota) Hodge of Syracuse; a grandson, Richard W. Hodge of Syracuse, and two nieces and two nephews.

    Herbert Warren Rogers was born in Philadephia, May 4, 1878, a son of Orlando and Sepha Jenne Rogers.  In Early life he moved with his parents to Syracuse and later to Clayton.  He was educated in the schools at each of those places.

    On Oct. 12, 1898, Mr. Rogers was married in Clayton by Rev. Dr. A. L. Danforth, Methodist minister.  His wife is a daughter of Captain Eldridge Kendall of Clayton and the late Mrs. Victoria Kendall.

    Shortly after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Rogers came to Watertown where they have since resided.  Forty years ago Mr. Rogers entered the plumbing and heating business by joining partnership with the late Arza C. McCrady under the firm
name of McCrady & Rogers.  The establishment was located at the present site of the McCrady Plumbing company, 573 State Street.

     The partnership continued for ten years, dissolving about 1909 with Mr. Rogers selling his interest to Mr. McCrady who continued the business under his own name until his death in September, 1924.  Shortly after the dissolution of the
McCrady & Rogers firm, Mr. Rogers went in business for himself at 505 State Street.

    He continued alone for three years until in April, 1912, when he entered into partnership with Allen R. Benson, 313 South Pleasant Street, operating the plumbing and heating business at 505 State Street.  This firm, known as Rogers &
Benson, continued for five years terminating in September, 1917.

    Since that time Mr. Rogers had been in the plumbing and heating business by himself being located first at 281 State Street, then at 212 North Rutland Street and later ar 335 Clay Street.  His business has been located at 147 Sterling
Street since last May.

   For the past seven weeks, during Mr. Rogers' illness, the business has been conducted by Roy Larkins, an employee of Mr. Rogers.

    In addition to the plumbing business, Mr. Rogers became interested in real estate 20 years ago and during that period purchased numerous houses and apartment houses.  Last May he purchased the late A. TenEyck Lansing residence property at
145 Sterling Street, for the purpose of converting it into an apartment house.

    Mr. Rogers was among the first members of the Watertown Lodge of Elks, No. 496 at its organization but had since ceased to be a member of the club.

    He was a member of the Watertown Lodge F. & A. M., No. 49; Watertown chapter, R. A. M., No. 50; and Watertown Comandery, No. 11, Knights Templar.


Mary E. FITZGERALD

Obituary (from Thousand Islands Sun of 10 Nov. 1977):  CLAYTON---Miss Mary E. Fitzgerald, 84, formerly of 532 James St., died Nov. 3 in Mecy Hospital, Watertown, where she had been admitted Wednesday.  She had been a resident of the hospital's
Madonna Home.

    The funeral was Saturday at St. Mary's Church, with Msgr. Herbert H. Hannan officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.

    Memorial donations may be made to the Clayton Ambulance and Fire Department.

    She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Lewis H. (Louise) Leonard, 511 Jane St.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Robert (Edwina) Fitztgerald, 321 James St., a nephew, Dr. Robert R. Fitzgerald, outer James St., and a niece, Mrs. M. Michael (Barbara)
Potocek, Westwood, N.J.  Three brothers and a sister died previously; Robert E. in 1968, James W. in 1970, M. Edward in 1977, and Miss Gertrude I. Ftizgerald, 1973.

    She was born May 26, 1893, at Clayton, a daughter of Michael and Mary Collolly Fitzgerald who had emigrated from Ireland.


Gertrude I. FITZGERALD

Obituary (from newspaper of 17 March 1973):  CLAYTON---Miss Gertrude I. Fitzgerald, 76, of 532 James St., a retired teacher, died at 8:25 p.m. Friday in Mercy Hospital, Watertown, where she had been a patient since March1.

    The funeral will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton, and at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Rev. Msgr. Dennis E. Lynch, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

    Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

    She is survived by two sisters, Miss Mary E. Fitzgerald and Mrs. Lewis H. (Louise) Leonard, both of Clayton; a brother, M. Edward Fitzgerald, Clayton; a nephew, Dr. Robert R. Fitzgerald, Clayton, and a niece, Mrs. M. Michael (Barbara J.)
Potocek, Westwood, N.J.  Two brothers, Robert E. and James W. Fitzgerald, both Clayton residents, predeceased her.

    Born at Clayton Aug. 6, 1896, daughter of Michael and Mary Connolly Fitzgerald, she was graduated from Clayton High School and training class and taught sixth grade at Clayton 36 years, retiring in June 1962.  She also taught five years at
Cape Vincent and four years in rural schools.  She took summer courses at Potsdam State University College.


Michael Edward FITZGERALD

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of 25 Jan. 1977):  CLAYTON---Michael Fitzgerald, 72, of 532 James St., a retired Great Lakes sailor, died Monday evening at the Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay, where he had been a patient two
weeks.  He had been in failing health in recent years.

    The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.

    There will be no calling hours.  Arrangements are with the Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton.

    He is survived by two sisters, Miss Mary E. Fitzgerald, 532 James St., and Mrs. Lewis H. (Louise) Leonard, 511 James St.; a nephew, Dr. Robert R. Fitzgerald, Clayton, and a niece, Mrs. Micahel (Barbara J.) Potocek, Westwood, N.J.

    Two brothers died before him, Robert E., Clayton, died Dec. 28, 1968, at the age of 70, and James W., Clayton, former village treasurer, died Oct. 13, 1970 at the age of 78.

    Born Sept. 4, 1904, at Clayton, a son of Michael and Mary Connolly Fitzgerald, he attended Clayton schools and served in the Merchant Marine in World War II on the Murmansk run to Russia.  He had sailed many years on vessels in the Great
Lake prior to retirement.

Ralph E. KENDALL

Obituary (from newspaper of 29 April 1997):  CLAYTON---A graveside service for Ralph E. Kendall, 89, of 703 State St., will be at noon Friday in Grove Cemetery, LaFargeville, with the Rev. John Klatt, pastor of Lutheran Evangelical Church,
Orleans Four Corners, and the Rev. David Windle, retired pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church, Watertown, officiating.  Arrangements are with T. R. Jetty Funeral Home.

    Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

    Mr. Kendall died Tuesday at Edward John Noble Hospital-Samaritan extended care facility, Alexandria Bay, where he had resided since Oct. 28.

    Mr. Kendall began working in 1928 at the Crowley Milk Co., LaFargeville, formerly Sheffield Farms, and the Jersey Milk and Cream Co., retiring May 1, 1973, as a field supervisor.  After retirement, he worked for 12 years at the former
Cleveland-Spink funeral Home and the former Hart and Johnson Funeral Home, both in Watertown.

    Born April 25, 1908, at Grindstone Island, son of Harry and Charlotte Potter Kendall, he attended area schools.

    He married Vivian Dorr on Oct. 19, 1929, at Dryer Methodist Episcopal Church, Utica, with the Rev. William Eddy officiating.

    Mr. Kendall was a member and past president of the Ontario Milk Sanitarians Association, a member of the New York State Milk and Food Sanitarians Association and the New York State Farm Practices Committee.

    He was also active for several years with the Cerebral Palsy Association, which he served as a director and first vice president.  He was member of the Lutheran Evangelical Church.

    Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Mrs. William (Audrey) Dominy, Clayton; two brothers, Harold and Walter, both of Clayton; a sister, Mary K. Kendall, Alexandria Bay; a granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.
