Emma F. KELLY

Obituary from the Watertown Daily Times of 17 Sept. 1945:  Mrs. Emma F. Packard, 83, widow of Hanson Packard, died at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Alanson Kinney, Syracuse, Saturday.  She had been ill about three weeks.

    A former resident of Grindstone Island and Clayton, Mrs. Packard had lived with her granddaughter for the past ten years.

    Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:30 from the Sears funeral home, North Syracuse and burial will be made at Rockland, Me.

    She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mae Hotaling Packard, widow of Dr. Thornton Packard, and the granddaughter with whom she lived.

    Mrs. Packard was born at Rockland, Me., Aug. 16, 1862, a daughter of the late James A. and Mary Horton Kelly.  The family came to Jefferson county when Mrs. Packard was a young woman and her father operated the quarries on Grindstone
Island.

    She was married to Mr. Packard at Rockland, Me., in 1883 and when the quarries on Grindstone Island were closed her husband and her father operated the Kelly and packard monumental works in the village of Clayton.  Her husband died in
Clayton in 1904.

    Their only son, Dr. Thornton Packard, died in Syracuse of pneumonia in 1923.

    Mrs. Packard had maintained a summer home on Grindstone Island since she left Jefferson County to live in Syracuse and had spent her summers there for some years.  She was active in the affairs of the Methodist church of both Grindstone
Island and Clayton.

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of 7 Nov. 1985):  CLAYTON---Lillian S. Kittle, 90, Riverview Apartments, died Wednesday at the Edward John Noble Hospital emergency room, Alexandria Bay.

    A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Clayton Baptist Church with Rev. G. Kent Walmsley, pastor, officiating.

    Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.

    There will be no calling hours.

    Donations may be made in her name to the Clayton Baptist Church or the Clayton Volunteer Ambulance Fund.

    Arrangements are with the Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton.

    She is survived by two step-sons, J. Murray Kittle, and Walter E. Kittle, Jr., both of Clayton; three sisters, Mrs. Leon (Marjorie) Rusho, Sr., Grindstone Island, Mrs. Caroline Archambeault, Rochester, and Mrs. Florence Russell,
Binghamton; several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    Three brothers and four sisters died before her.

    Born on May 2, 1895 on Grindstone Island, the daughter of Ambrose and Ordelia Graham Dano, she attended Grindstone Island School and was graduated from Clayton High School.

    She also was graduated from Nursing School in Philadelphia, Pa., and worked there as a registered nurse.

    She married Dr. Gordon Joel Saxton on March 12, 1921 in Philadelphia, Pa., and worked as his office nurse until his death in 1943.

    She married Walter Kittle in January 1965.  He died on Feb. 24, 1972.


Walter E. KITTLE

Obituary (from newspaper of 24 Feb. 1972):  CLAYTON---Walter E. Kittle, 73, of 637 Riverside Drive, retired automobile dealer and former village mayor died this morning at his winter home in Crescent City, Fla.  He had been hospitalized two
weeks, but had returned home.

    Arrangements are with the Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton, pending arrival of the body.  Donations may be made to the Heart Fund.

    Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lillian S. Butler Kittle; two sons, Walter E., Jr., and J. Murray, both associated with the operation of Kittle Motors, Inc., at Clayton; two sisters, Mrs. Harold (Mildred) Bretsch, LaFargeville, Mrs. E. J.
(Helen) Carter, Clayton; a brother, Lawrence R. (Ted), Clayton; and grandchildren.

    Born Sept. 27, 1898, at Clayton, a son of Frank B. and Jessie C. Murdoch Kittle, he was graduated from Clayton High School in 1917 and spent all his life in the Clayton vicinity.

    Mr. Kittle was associated with Gillick's Garage 19 years.  He worked as a salesman and was named office manager in 1926.  For a time also he was associated with Walter Cummings in the operation of a funeral home.

    In November, 1936, he and Robert Guyette organized the firm of Guyette and Kittle and began operating their business at the Guyette Garage on Riverside Drive.  Mr. Kittle was head of the sales department, and Mr. Guyette was head of the
service department of the Plymouth, Desoto, Chrysler, and Studebaker agency.

    The partnership continued through 1941.  World War II forced closing of the facilities, and in 1946, following Mr. Guyette's death, Mr. Kittle purchased the present facilities at 635 Riverside Drive.  Kittle Motors was incorporated in May,
1955.  Mr. Kittle retired in 1970.

    After serving two terms as a village trustee, he was elected to a term as mayor in March, 1931.

    Mr. Kittle married Frances M. Murray, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Murray, natives of St. Lawrence County, June 1, 1921, in the rectory of St. Mary's Church.  She died in August, 1963.  He married Lillian S. Butler, a native of
Grindstone Island, in January, 1965, in Florida.

    He was a member of the Clayton Baptist Church, Clayton Lodge 296, F & AM, was a past high priest of Clayton Chapter, 301, RAM; the Clayton Lions Club, was a former member of the Clayton Chamber of Commerce and an exempt member of the
Clayton Fire Department.
