John M. RIDDLER

Obituary from the Watertown Daily Times of 8 April 1940: CLAYTON--John M. Riddler, sr., 76, for many years a stonecutter in the quarry on Grindstone Island, died at the home of his son, John M. Riddler, jr., 527 Theresa street, early this
morning following an illness of over five years.  Death was due to a heart ailment which developed following a stroke he suffered in 1935.

    Funeral services will be held from the home of his son Wednesday afternoon at 1:30, followed by services in the Clayton Methodist church at 2 with Rev. William Eddy officiating.  Burial will be made in the St. Lawrence cemetery.

    He was born in Kemnay, Scotland, Jan. 8, 1864, a son of Robert and Margaret Milne Riddler, and learned his trade as a stonecutter in that country.  At the age of 19, he came to this country, working in stone quarries in the New England
states and Missouri.  He came to Grindstone Island 52 years ago this summer and was employed in the granite quarries of that island and Picton Island.  When the quarries closed on the islands, Mr. Riddler moved to this village in 1902 and for
many years worked as a stone cutter in Canada.  For several years prior to his illness in 1935, he was employed in the Frink Sno-Plow factory.

    He was married on Nov. 29, 1889, to Miss Sarah P. Johnson of Grindstone Island.  Mrs. Riddler died on May 29, 1939.  Since her death, Mr. Riddler had made his home with his son.

    Surviving are two sons, John M. Riddler, jr., Clayton; Edwin Riddler, Detroit, Mich.; three daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Jeanette) Allard, Lawrence, Mass.; Mrs. George (Lillian) Fitzgerald, Binghamton, and Mrs. William (Flora) Delaney,
Watertown; four sisters, Miss Margaret Riddler and Mrs. Aleck Ross, Aberdeen, Scotland; Miss Isabel Riddler, London, Eng., and Mrs. George Weaver, Boston, Mass. , and one brother, William Riddler of Scotland.

Obituary from the Watertown Daily Times of 31 May 1939: CLAYTON--Funeral services for Mrs. John Riddler who died at her home, 679 Riverside Drive, early Monday morning, were held today at 2 p.m. (E.D.T.) from the home.  Rev. Royal B. Fishbeck,
pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, officiated.

    Mrs. Riddler was born on Grindstone Island Nov. 29, 1871, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Johnson.  She attended the schools on the island and lived there until her marriage to Mr. Riddler 50 years ago.  At the time of their
marriage Mr. Riddler was a stone cutter by trade.  he came here from Aberdeen, Scotland, and settled on Grindstone Island where he was employed in the quarries there and on Picton Island.  Mr. Riddler, a former employee of the Frink Sno-Plow
factory, has been in failing health and confined to his home for the past four or five years.

    Besides her husband she is survived by two sons, John of Clayton and Edwin of Detroit, and three daughters, Mrs. George Fitzgerald, Binghamton; Mrs. Clarence Allard and Mrs. William Delaney, Watertown, and several nieces and nephews.
Burial will be made in the St. Lawrence cemetery.
