Charles Henry "Dod" MCAVOY

Obituary (from newspaper of 26 Dec. 1973):  CLAYTON---The funeral for Charles A. McAvoy, 82, of 533 English Town Road, Old Bridge, N.J., formerly of Clayton, who died Saturday in the Sunnyfield Nursing Home, Cranbury, N.J., was Monday at 2 p.m.
at the C.S. Cole, Son and Co., Funeral Home, Cranbury, Rev. Harold Brackbill of the Jamesburg, N.J., Presbyterian Church officiating.

    Spring burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.

    Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lydia Wagner McAvoy; two daughters, Mrs. Betty Shaw, Clayton, Mrs. Nancy Ferguson, Waretown, N.J.; three sons, Charles J., Jamesburg, Josiah W., Vineland, N.J., James C., Cranbury, and grandchildren.

    Born Jan. 22, 1891, on Grindstone Island, a son of Josiah and Ida Kendall McAvoy, he was a resident and farmer in the Clayton vicinity until 24 years ago, when he took up residence in New Jersey.  He married the former Lydia Wagner years
ago.


Josiah W. MCAVOY

Josiah emigrated before age 18 and at that time owed allegiance to Queen Victoria.  He was naturalized 4 Feb. 1887.


William H. HYDE

Obituary (from Thousand Islands Sun of 11 Oct. 1973):  CLAYTON---William H. Hyde, 77, Clayton Center, Route 1, well-known retired dairy farmer, died at the home of a son, Robert A. Hyde Friday morning.

    The funeral was Monday morning at St. Mary's Church with Rev. Msgr. Dennis E. Lynch, pastor, officiating.  Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

    He is survived by two sons, Robert A. and Charles W., both of Clayton Center, eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, a niece, Mrs. Edmund (Virginia) Moriarty, Short Hills, N.J. and a nephew, David Hyde, Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

    Born at Clayton Dec. 12, 1895, a son of David and Esther Peoples Hyde, he attended local schools and married Zuba K. McAvoy, a native of Grindstone Island, April 1, 1918, in Philadelphia, Pa.

    The couple operated a dairy farm near Clayton several years.  He was once cited as Farmer of the Year, and was a  member of the Cooperative Extension Service.

    Mrs. Hyde died Dec. 14, 1969, at the age of 75 years.

    A member of St. Mary's Church, he was a 50-year member of 1000 Islands Council, Knights of Columbus.


Zuba K. MCAVOY

Obituary (from Thousand Islands Sun of 18 Dec. 1969):  CLAYTON---Mrs. Zuba K. Hyde, 75, Long Acre Farm, Clayton Center-Depauville Road, wife of William H. Hyde, died Sunday night at the E.J. Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay, where she had been a
patient since Dec. 5.  She was in failing health three years.

    The funeral was Wednesday morning at St. Mary's Church.  Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

    Surviving, besides her husband are two sons, Robert A. and Charles W., Clayton; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles McAvoy, New Jersey, and Byron G. McAvoy, Clayton.

    She was born on Grindstone Island Jan. 20, 1894, daughter of Josiah and Ida Kendall McAvoy.  After attending Clayton schools she was graduated from Women's Hospital training school for Nurses at West Philadelphia, Pa., where she worked as
night supervisor prior to her marriage on April 1, 1918, at West Philadelphia.

    The couple came to Clayton, where they have since lived.  Mr. Hyde was a dairy farmer until his retirement.  On March 31, 1968 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at an open house at their home.

    Mrs. Hyde was active in 1941 in World War II and received a citation from the Jefferson County American Red Cross.  She taught home nursing, first aid bandaging, and gave lectures to groups.  In 1967 she was honored by her alma mater and a
50-year member of the Alumnae Association of the Women's Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa.

    Mrs. Hyde was a member of St. Mary's Church, of the Ladies of St. Anne, K. of C. auxiliary and Thousand Islands Council auxiliary.

Kenneth L. GARNSEY

Obituary (from newspaper of 2 Jan. 1975):  Kenneth L. Garnsey, 68, former Clayton area resident, died at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday at Mercy Hospital.  He had been a resident of the McAuley Hall, health-related facility for the last few years.

    A private graveside service will be held Friday at North Watertown Cemetery with Rev. W. Russell Clark, pastor, Asbury United Methodist Church, officiating.

    There will be no calling hours.  The Simpson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

    He is survived by two sons, Donald A., Rochester, and Richard ,Watertown; a daughter, Mrs. Joan Barron, Watertown, five grandchildren and a brother, Paul Garnsey, Clayton.

    Born on Grindstone Island Sept. 11, 1906, a son of Benjamin and Helen Gale Garnsey, he was employed several years by the Thousand Islands State Park Commission as a caretaker.  He resided most of his life in the Clayton area.  His marriage
to Doris I. Dano on June 24, 1927, ended in divorce.  She later died Sept. 18, 1968.


Doris I. DANO

Obituary from newspaper of 19 Sept. 1968:  Miss Doris I. Dano, 55, of 152 Acandemy street, the former Mrs. Kenneth L. Garnsey, died suddenly at 3:45 Wednesday afternoon in the Mercy Hospital, where she had been a patient since Monday.  An
autopsy was performed.

    Miss Dano, a waitress at the Victory Club diner, suffered a heart attack at her home Monday.  Her condition seemed to be improving at the hospital until it took a sudden turn for the worse Wednesday.

    The funeral will be Saturday morning at 11 at the Simpson Funeral Home.  Rev. J. Edwin Ring, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate.  Burial will be in North Watertown cemetery.

    Friends may call at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 9 and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

    Surviving her are two sons, Donald A. Garnsey, Rochester, and Richard G. Garnsey, 703 Academy street; a daughter, Mrs. Joan L. Garnsey Kerns, 152 Academy street; five grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Paul (Gladys) Joles, Halesite, L.I.,
Mrs. William (Bertha) VanAlstyne, Tucson, Ariz., Mrs. Alice Ward, Geneseo, Mrs. Frederick D. (Helen) Miller, Thousand Island Park, and Mrs. Judd (Mary) Mallory, Auburn.

    Another son of Miss Dano, Everett Leslie Garnsey, Rochester, formerly of Watertown, died in Rochester June 10, 1957 at the age of 22.

    A brother of Miss Dano, Pvt. Maxwell E. Dano, of Depauville, was killed in action in Italy during World War II on April 23, 1945.  Two other brothers are also dead.  They were Raymond C. Dano and Gerald Dano of Auburn.

    Miss Dano was born March 14, 1913 on Grindstone Island, a daughter of the late Thomas R. and M. Louine Patterson Dano.  She spent the early part of her life in the town of Clayton.

    She was married to Kenneth L. Garnsey, also of Grindstone Island, at Clayton June 24, 1927.  The marriage ended in a divorce in 1948, and she resumed her maiden name.

    A resident of Watertown for about 25 years, Miss Dano had been employed in various restaurants or hotels, including the Capitol Restaurant and the Roosevelt Hotel.  She was last employed at the Victory Diner.
