Dear GIRHC Member,
I am writing to update you on the status of events for this summer of 2020 at the Schoolhouse.
It saddens me to announce that due to the pandemic we are going to cancel all GIRHC events for this season. This will include the July 4th Mule Parade and the Summer Auction/Picnic. Unfortunately we will also be canceling the Summer Program for children at the Red Schoolhouse. Currently the grounds and the Ship playground are roped off for nonuse. We will monitor this as the summer moves along and in conjunction with New York State and the Town of Clayton Covid-19 protocol the Board will make a further determination as to opening the grounds.
We have determined along with the Church and Dodge Memorial Hall that it is critical to take all precautions to protect our community at this difficult time. While gathering in large groups remains a health issue we have decided not to put the health of our island family at risk. We will keep you updated as to the grounds and playground possibly opening.
The GIRHC Board has met this June (virtually) and we are happy to share with you that many projects will continue to move forward as we work to sustain the Heritage of Grindstone Island. Our Lower Schoolhouse committee is working on development of the Interactive Museum by meeting with other local museums. We are also identifying building projects on the schoolhouse which can begin being prioritized.
Also, work will continue on the restoration of the Upper Schoolhouse in conjunction with the Town of Clayton. Much has been accomplished over the winter and will continue through the summer.
We will continue to reward scholarships this summer as we have historically. The Scholarship committee has received 3 applications and has approved them based on their genealogical standards.
There is much work to be done even during this very different time and while we will miss our gatherings that bind us together, our hope at GIRHC is that next year at this time we will all be healthy and gathering together once again.
